Iconography and Ideology in film

We have decided to record our film in London, as we stated how we wanted to create a real gritty British film, and steer clear of the stereotyped American film, which constantly spoon feeds the audience, and tells them exactly what they are meant to think. By producing our film in London we allow Iconography to take place, in order to show off famous landmarks and to show the ideology of traditional British culture. The film should make us proud to be British, and help us associate with all things British.
One of the landmarks we were keen to film was out side the royal Opera house in Covent Garden as it is a fantastic juxtaposition in class to the ever so popular street performers who work in the square. This allows us to emphasise the gap within the two mediums of dance, whilst using famous landmarks, which our audience can relate to. as soon as your audience can relate to landmarks in the film, they should be able to feel more involved in the film, which will enhance their cinematic experience.
One of our objectives in producing our film was to make it believable and realistic as we value realism in film. This allows us to empathises and sympathise more with the characters. Using iconography in a fictional film can also enhance this sense of realism, which we endeavour to achieve, as many people will have visited these places allowing them to identify with them and make the film more believable, whilst still being a fictional text.
London is a great place for filming as other blockbuster films have shown us, with popular James Bond scenes and Harry Potter films using the technique of Ideology to make the film feel more British; they do this by using iconographic landmarks. This ensures the film is increasing in tension, for instance in 'The World is not Enough' as The Millennium Dome and the River Thames have been used to emphasise British values, make the audience feel almost patriotic, which has created tension and drama in the sequences. We intend for our carefully chosen film locations to iconise our production and add to the drama created, whilst also having a hint of patriotism and showing the audience what a fantastically vibrant place London can be.
