Codes and conventions

The codes and conventions used in the film are done in such a way as to relate to all age groups. This is a good idea as it will increase the target market. The opening sequence will use cutting techniques in order to show the juxtaposition between two peoples lives. The idea being that the Professional dancer, who does dance for a living, and who does not particularly enjoy it, starves herself and takes drugs in order to improve her dancing skills in a professional capacity. The hip hop dancer is a contrast as he deals in drugs for a living but uses the medium of dance in order to promote this, whilst he also uses dance as an escape for pleasure. We hope to convey these conventions through the codes of clever editing, by cutting from one life to another, and syncing the action proportionately with our soundtrack. Also the use of costume will hopefully act as a code in order to allow the two opposing characters to be easily identified. We intend our conventions, vales and beliefs to be represented in our use of camera work, editing ,sound and costume but we do not intend to spoon feed the audience too much, it will be clear as to what we wish to achieve from our film but the audience will hopefully take their own ideas and interpretations away with them.
We are intending to show how two cultures are thrown together through dance and how they respond to their own challenges in different ways. The values and beliefs we intend to convey, is that drugs should not be glorified but is an ever present issue in today's society. Many people do use them as they are a big part of peoples lives. We would like to show how the character's lives are made so much more positive by channeling their energy positively into interests which allow them to express themselves. The formula we provide is to start the film intense and to make it slightly lighter as it progresses. This will hopefully allow tension and drama to take place in the opening sequences before developing into a slightly lighter, uplifting climax. This is done by resolving the conflict at the end of our sequence. Enhancing our ideologies and stance we take on the issues explored in our film.
